Powder Caking vs. Agglomeration: What’s the Difference?

Engineering considerations: powder caking vs. agglomeration: what’s the difference. Compare handling methods, selection inputs and application limits.

Two terms, different decisions

Agglomeration describes particles gathering into larger structures. It can be intentional, as part of a granulated product, or unwanted. Caking normally refers to an undesirable hardening or consolidation during handling or storage. The same plant may need to preserve one type of agglomerate and break another, so naming the phenomenon is only the start of selection.

Define what must survive

Ask whether the primary particles, a coating, a granule or a formulated blend must remain intact. A process intended to reduce loose storage lumps may be unsuitable if it damages a required granule. State the permitted amount of fines and how particle condition will be evaluated after treatment.

Match the location of the problem

Inside a closed FIBC, external conditioning is a packaging-constrained operation. In a process line, a rotor or shaft-based breaker works on exposed feed. Fine milling is a different duty with different objectives. Avoid specifying all three using only the word “deagglomeration”; describe the input, output and interface instead.

Ask for evidence, not a label

Provide sample photographs, storage history, approximate lump dimensions and the downstream process requirement. Review a trial against those criteria. A supplier’s generic equipment category cannot establish performance on a particular powder, and a reduction in visible lump size does not by itself prove the product remains within its quality specification.
