What Causes Powder Caking in Industrial Materials?

Engineering considerations: what causes powder caking in industrial materials. Compare handling methods, selection inputs and application limits.

Identify when the change occurred

Compare a newly received sample with material taken after storage. Record bag position in the stack, time in storage, temperature history and visible signs of moisture. A photograph of the outside of a bag cannot establish how hard the contents are or whether the product remains within specification. Retain the original batch and packaging information so that an equipment trial can be related to an actual operating condition.

Separate the mechanisms

Powder caking describes an unwanted loss of the loose particulate state. Moisture-related bonding and consolidation under load can contribute in different proportions. Some materials also undergo chemical changes. Treat an explanation as a hypothesis until material-specific evidence supports it; a machine that breaks the resulting mass does not necessarily remove the cause of future caking.

Choose a recovery route

If the material is still inside a suitable FIBC, assess an external bulk bag conditioner. If the material is exposed and contains discrete lumps, assess a dedicated breaker against the required outlet condition. If the obstruction is at a hopper outlet, investigate the hopper and feeder interface. These are separate process decisions.

Build a useful trial brief

Specify acceptable fines, bag integrity, discharge completeness and the next process step. Include rejected or worst-case samples rather than only easy material. Ask the supplier to document the tested configuration and observations. This creates evidence for a selection decision without turning one demonstration into a promise for every batch.
